Cookies and Tracking in PocketDPE
Effective date: October 13, 2026.
PocketDPE is a native iPhone and iPad app, so it does not use browser cookies. This page explains what it does store on your device, the identifiers it uses, and how to switch off anything that is optional. For the full picture of what data we collect, see our Privacy Policy.
What the app stores on your device
These stay on your phone or iPad unless a section below says otherwise.
- Your settings and profile: your name, rating, aircraft, home airport, goals, input mode and examiner preference, and your answers from setup. Needed for the app to work.
- Your practice history: session transcripts, grades and debriefs, your written-test codes, flashcard and spaced-repetition progress, and a list of sessions you deleted (so they are not synced back). Needed for history, resume and progress. When you are signed in, your session history is also kept on our server (see the Privacy Policy).
- Subscription status: a cached copy of whether you have Pro, so the app works when you are offline, plus when the paywall and its one-time offer were last shown.
- Prompts already shown: when you were last asked for feedback or a review, and whether you have seen the disclaimer for the "DPE from hell" examiner.
- Temporary audio: each answer you record is saved as a temporary file while it is sent, and deleted automatically within a day. The examiners' spoken introductions from setup (which can include your first name) are downloaded so they play instantly, and are deleted automatically within a day.
- Analytics queue: if analytics are allowed, usage events wait here until they are sent, together with a random analytics ID.
What is kept in the iOS Keychain
- Your sign-in session (from our sign-in provider, Clerk), so you stay signed in. Strictly necessary.
- Your AI-processing consent and whether its reminder has been shown. Strictly necessary: it records your choice.
- Your privacy choices for usage analytics and crash reports. Strictly necessary: it records your choice.
Items in the Keychain can remain on your device after you delete the app. Erase data on this device (below) removes your sign-in session and your AI-processing consent; it keeps your privacy choices, so an analytics or crash-report opt-out stays switched off.
Identifiers and tracking
- Analytics ID (PostHog): a random ID created by the app, replaced by your account ID once you sign in. It is used only to count how the app is used. It is optional; see "Your choices".
- Crash reporting (Sentry): a random installation ID attached to crash reports so repeated crashes on one device can be grouped. Optional; see "Your choices".
- Account ID: the ID our sign-in provider gives your account, used to keep your history and subscription tied to you. Strictly necessary.
- No advertising identifiers. The app does not use Apple's advertising identifier (IDFA), contains no ads or ad networks, and does not track you across other companies' apps or websites.
Your choices
Open Settings › Legal & privacy › Privacy choices:
- Usage analytics — on or off. If your device's region is in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, analytics stay off until you allow them; elsewhere they are on until you turn them off. Turning them off stops sending immediately and deletes any events still waiting on your device.
- Crash reports — on or off. Turning them off stops reports immediately; turning them back on takes effect the next time you open the app.
AI processing (sending your voice and answers to OpenAI) has its own switch: Settings › Privacy › AI Services.
To remove everything else the app stores on your device, use Settings › Legal & privacy › Erase data on this device. It keeps your privacy choices and signs you out; your account and the data on our server are not affected.
Web pages
- Our pages for this policy, the Privacy Policy, the Terms of Use, the Refund Policy and support, whether shown on pocketdpe.org, on our server or on GitHub Pages, set no cookies and load no analytics or tracking scripts.
- Our website, pocketdpe.org, sets no cookies and uses no analytics or advertising trackers.
Because none of our pages sets a non-essential cookie, there is no cookie banner to accept.
